I employ traditional counselling skills including Humanistic-existential, Transpersonal and Psychodynamic therapy as the foundation for my approach but integrate the cognitive-somatic (mind-body) approach of Emotional Freedom Techniques to create a session tailored to each individual's needs. No two sessions are the same because everyone is different and each client's needs change throughout the course of therapy.
EFT belongs within the so-call Fourth-wave of psychology and is a form of Energy Psychology, based on an amalgamation of ancient Chinese medicine and Western psychotherapy. It is often referred to as 'emotional acupuncture without needles'. Using acupressure techniques, this evidence-based, trauma-informed cognitive-somatic approach brings the mind and body together offering a simple, gentle yet effective way to work through past events, feelings and thoughts and relieve emotional and physical discomfort and pain. Gentle tapping on acupoints alongside traditional psychotherapeutic exploration, calms the amygdala and lowers adrenaline and cortisol, softens resistance, soothes the defences and enables the natural process of releasing and healing to unfold. Because it works simultaneously with the mind and body, it often works where nothing else will and has an proven record in working through anxiety, trauma and PTSD. Used either on its own or integrated with other approaches, such as traditional counselling or psychotherapy, it often hastens the course of therapy and can achieve sustainable results relatively painlessly.
